WiMax

Before LTE, there was a 4G wireless service dubbed WiMax. It can provide incredibly fast speeds, up to twice as fast as the fastest cable connections. Still, the signal is delivered wirelessly, and therefore can reaches that cables and phone lines cannot. These are often termed “last mile” issues, and affect rural areas of the country. With robust WiMax networks, carriers can more easily provide high-speed internet services to this area without having to lay expensive cable.

WiMax hasn’t caught on widely in the U.S. Clearwire, a partner of Sprint, is one of the few providers. LTE appears to be the preferred wireless solution, but there could be an initiative down the road to deploy WiMax services as a replacement for wired internet connections.
