Clearwire soft launches service in Las Vegas

by Joe on June 8, 2009

Having traveled to Las Vegas four times in 12 months, there is one thing I can definitively say about the city: they could use some better wireless Internet access. This can be said of many cities, but Las Vegas is the host to countless conventions year-round, many of which involve businesspeople who rely on the Internet. The improvement may be in the form of WiMax, as Clearwire has begun offering its Clear service in the city. This is a soft launch, so there are no store openings or advertising, but customers can still sign up for the service if they want to be part of it before the public gets wind.

Says Jennifer Morgan, spokeswoman for Clearwire:

“In advance of our full commercial launch of Las Vegas scheduled for this summer, we are now selling Clear service as part of our operational readiness activities. Store openings, advertising, and other market activities will be a part of our full commercial launch, but residents of Las Vegas can now go to Clear.com and order services.”

This is similar to what Clearwire did in Atlanta, as they soft-launched service there in May. Again, this isn’t to say that the service is available on a widespread basis. They’re not really advertising, and as of now there are no vendors set up. Interested customers can check out more information at Clear.com.

With Portland and Baltimore already launched and with Las Vegas and Atlanta in pre-launch, it looks like Clearwire will be moving on with Chicago, Philadelphia, and Dallas/Ft. Worth, plus re-jiggering of their fixed markets in Seattle, Honolulu, and Charlotte to mobile WiMax. Clearwire has been getting some grief lately, but they’re responding with action.
