Verizon jumps on free Wi-Fi bandwagon

by Joe on May 4, 2009

Not long after Verizon criticized Cablevision over their “marketing trick” of offering customers free Wi-Fi, they’ve gone and done it themselves. The company is aiming to launch Wi-Fi services to their home broadband customers by this summer, according to The Wall Street Journal. This not only mimics the cable subscribers that Verizon has criticized, but it also mirrors that of rival AT&T. It loks like the “marketing trick” really does work.

Verizon plans to partner with Boingo for the Wi-Fi services. There are still some issue up in the air, such as whether to allow nationwide access to subscribers, or limit it to their home region. It would probably be a smart move to offer this nationwide. The usage likely wouldn’t be a huge issue, and it would look like a less limited offering.

There hasn’t been any comment to this point from either Verizon or Boingo, but that’s typical of a pending deal. Once they cross the Ts and dot the Is they’ll be sure to get that announcement out there.
