If you’re a customer of Virgin Media’s cable or fixed line packages, you could be in for a treat. The company is now offering mobile broadband services for just £5 on top of existing monthly charges. It’s got a low usage limit at 1 gigabyte, but that’s still a lot of data for the price.
Data rates will be determined by what cable or Internet package the customer currently has. Virgin’s XL package subscribers can use the service at 20 Mbps, subscribers to L can access it at 10 Mbps, and those on fixed line broad band service can get speeds up to 8 Mbps. These latter customers get unlimited usage as well, which could make signing up for the service more attractive.
Another price to consider is the £25 charge for the USB modem. This is, however, a one-time fee, so it is much more manageable.
One would hope that Virgin considers a similar offer for mobile broadband services in the U.S. They recently acquired Helio, another American telecom, and with it negotiated a new agreement with host network Sprint. Virgin can now offer high-speed EVDO data, and could spin this into a low-cost mobile broadband plan.
Cricket Communications, another U.S. carrier, is making a mobile broadband push, though not as cheap as Virgin in the UK. They charge $35 per month for existing phone customers, though there is no usage limit.
