Aggressive forecasts for wireless internet growth

by Joe on February 12, 2009

Every once in a while we get some report on the forecasted growth of a certain industry. This is prevalent in the cellular world, where forecasters always talk about how many will be covered by wireless spectrum in the coming years. The latest deals with mobile broadband, which should reach 150 million connection by 2014. That’s just in Europe, so you can imagine the worldwide number being much larger.

This number deals with connections, so it means the number of devices which hook up with the network. Some people have multiple accounts, so it’s not accurate to say 150 million Europeans will be using mobile broadband by 2014. It’s along the same lines as many European countries having a greater than 100 percent cellular saturation rate.

In other forecasting news, WiMax Forum has projected that WiMax will cover 800 million people by 2010. Huge number, right? Remember, this also isn’t individual accounts. This is the total number of people worldwide who would have access to WiMax services. The total number of people covered worldwide is currently 430 million, which covers 135 countries.
